Recordable Blu-ray

June 5, 2008 | Recordable Blu-ray

The Blu-ray recordable format provides many opportunities beyond high definition recording.  The increased storage capacity of 25GB to 50GB expands the usage of optical disc for archival storage and multimedia presentations.  Unlike DVD recordable media,  Recordable Blu-ray is manufactured with a single polycarbonate layer which reduces the permeation of oxygen to the dye and reflective layer of the Blu-ray and increases the life of the recordable Blu-ray disc. The great thing about current Blu-ray recordable drive technology is that it is multi format capable of burning CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R and BD-R.  This allows the use of different media for different applications.

It’s interesting to note that the expectations of lower pricing on players and recorders (and recordable BD-R media) is an important factor in the acceptance of Blu-ray.  I think back to the release of CD recordable and DVD and I’m amazed by the assertion.  CD recorders were thousands of dollars and DVD recorders were tens of thousands.  Years later the technical achievement of blue laser is met with more subdued celebration.  The permation of DVD has only just taken place.   High defination has become a hook to convince consumers to replace their new cheap DVD players and recorders with new technology. It’s not the cost per say but the newness that becomes the issue.
